Labiaplasty

What is Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a highly effective aesthetic procedure, focused on reshaping labia minora that causes the patient dissatisfaction. Many women experience inner labia minora that protrude beyond the outer labia majora. As a result, these sensitive areas of skin can become irritated during regular activities, causing ongoing discomfort.

However, women do not have to suffer from rubbing, chafing and pain during intercourse or exercise thanks to advancements in gynecological plastic surgery. Labiaplasty is the most popular and common vulvar procedure that improves the quality of life for many women.

WHY CHOOSE LABIAPLASTY SURGERY?

It may be worth considering labiaplasty if labial tissue is interfering with normal day-to-day life and self-esteem.

Several factors can contribute to labia minora hypertrophy, including genetics, weight loss, aging, childbirth, or other trauma. Labia minora hypertrophy can pose both aesthetic and functional challenges in addition to causing discomfort during intimacy and chafing during exercise. Labiaplasty surgery can significantly improve appearance and confidence.

Labiaplasty is an extremely effective procedure to address issues of discomfort and dissatisfaction by providing the following benefits:

  • The correction of labial asymmetry, where only one side of the labia is enlarged

  • Reducing the size of the inner labia if it extends beyond the outer labia

  • Enhancing and tightening labia that have become loose due to age-related declines in elastin and collagen

  • Restoring self-confidence following childbirth or weight loss

CONSULTATION

Every patient receives an initial consultation which can be done in person or virtually. Dr. Reed encourages you to bring a few pictures of different labiaplasty examples to your consultation, both ones you like and dislike so that we can discuss your aesthetic preferences in detail and have a better understanding of what you hope to achieve. Dr. Reed has many BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS on his website, so we encourage you to view these photos prior to your consultation.

In your consultation, Dr. Reed and his staff will do everything we can to make you as comfortable as possible. We will discuss what your specific bothers and goals are and develop a customized surgical plan for you. Dr. Reed also specializes in both surgical and nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation options as well.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR LABIAPLASTY PROCEDURE?

Labiaplasty at Dr. Michael Reed’s office is performed under local anesthesia for your safety. We provide an anxiolytic medication, and topical numbing cream, and have ProNox™ (patient-controlled laughing gas) available to keep you comfortable. The procedure can last about 1-4 hours depending on anatomy, complexity, techniques performed, or if you choose to add on other procedures like clitoral hood reduction, vaginoplasty, perineoplasty, or fat transfer to the labia majora. Our knowledgeable surgical team is dedicated to ensuring a seamless experience.

WHAT ABOUT RECOVERY FROM LABIAPLASTY?

After the labiaplasty procedure, patients will rest at the facility for a short time. Dr. Reed requires that a friend or family member drive the patient home. He also encourages patients to reach out to him with any questions or concerns after the surgery.

About a week after labiaplasty surgery, Dr. Reed will meet with the patient for a post-op examination. He wants to be sure they are healing well. Generally, most women take a few days off from work.

RECOVERY GUIDELINES

Our office provides a surgical recovery “Love Bag” to ensure you have all of the tools necessary for your comfort and healing.

Treat the surgical site with ice packs for the first three to five days: 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.

Use a stool softener to prevent constipation.

Don’t exercise for at least two weeks and then only with medical approval.

Wear loose clothing, avoid using tampons, and do not participate in oral sex, anal sex, or intercourse.

Do not soak in water including bubble baths and hot tubs.

Most of our patients describe the pain related to recovery as totally manageable. We prescribe a short prescription pain regimen and many women manage postoperative pain with over-the-counter medications like Tylenol or Motrin. As the nerves heal and the stitches dissolve, patients may feel itching, which they can treat with an antihistamine such as Benadryl, as well as a topical spray that will be provided in your surgical recovery “Love Bag”. These symptoms usually subside after just 7-10 days.

At six weeks after the labiaplasty, patients will have mostly healed. However, it will take four to six months to see the final results of the procedure.
